What you do first: Examine the concept of “folkways” in your textbook. Chapter 2 (along with the “Examples of Folkways” document in Blackboard) will be useful in explaining this sociological concept.

The purpose of this assignment is to learn more about the social nature/origin of people’s behavior. After completing the research and the paper you should be able to recognize the interrelationship among norms (folkways), social control (positive and negative sanctions) and conformity. All assignments must be submitted to Blackboard. I will accept late papers, but I will deduct 2 points per day after the original due date.

Your paper should include proper grammar and spelling. Keep in mind that this is a scholarly paper, and it should be presented as such.  The paper must be double spaced using 11-point font (font style is your choice). A cover page is not required.

If you feel that your writing skills need improvement, then I would recommend making an advising appointment with the University Writing Center before you complete and submit your paper. Their contact information is located on the “Writing Assignments” page in Blackboard.

  1. What you do first: Examine the concept of “folkways” in your textbook. Chapter 2 (along with the “Examples of Folkways” document in Blackboard) will be useful in explaining this sociological concept.

  1. Now you must go out into the real world and break three different folkways. For each folkway you are to choose 3 people and observe their reactions to your behavior (that would be 9 reactions total in your observations).  Keep track of two social characteristics of each person (sex, age, class, status, race, ethnic group, etc.) because you will restate these characteristics in your paper.
  2. Type a 2–3-page paper describing your findings. Specifically, your paper should be structured as

follows:

  1. Paragraph #1 is the Introduction (6 points total).

-Define culture, norms, mores and folkways (1 point for each definition). Be sure to provide citations for your                           definitions (see below).

-When you “borrow” information (definitions, examples, information, etc.) from another source (books, articles, movies, etc.) you are required to give credit to that source by providing a citation using the ASA (American Sociological Association) style that is described below. I will not deduct points if citations are done incorrectly in this assignment, but I will in the second writing assignment.

-ASA style in-text citations: (Author’s last name-space-Year published-colon-no space-page number).

An example from your book would be (Henslin 2019:75).

An example from the Power Point Slides is (Power Point Slides 2021: chpt. 2).

-Tell me what you plan to do (1 point).

-Tell me what typically happens when one’s behavior goes beyond the boundaries of cultural and

social norms/expectations.  Be specific (1point).

  1. Paragraph #2 deals with your first broken folkway (5 points total).

-Include the folkway that you broke (1 point).

-Two social characteristics (age, sex, status, race, etc.) of each person (1 point).

-Describe the reactions of three different people (1 point for each reaction).

  1. Paragraph #3 deals with your second broken folkway (5 points total).

-Include the folkway that you broke (1 point).

-Two social characteristics (age, sex, status, race, etc.) of each person (1 point).

-Describe the reactions of three different people (1 point for each reaction).

  1. Paragraph #4 deals with your third broken folkway (5 points total).

-Include the folkway that you broke (1 point).

-Two social characteristics (age, sex, status, race, etc.) of each person (1 point).

-Describe the reactions of the three different people (1 point for each reaction).

  1. Paragraph #5 is the Conclusion (4 points total).

-What did you expect (1 point)?

-What did you learn (1 point)?

-Were you surprised by your findings (1 point)?

-Make a statement about why we conform.  How do the reactions of others (specifically through positive

and negative sanctions) cause us to conform (1 point)?

*An ASA Style References Page is required. When you cite/use a source in your paper then you must include a References page.  An example is provided below.

Henslin, James M. 2019. Essentials of Sociology: A Down-To-Earth Approach (13th edition).

Boston, MA: Pearson.

OR

Power Point Slides. 2021. Chapter 2: Culture. Accessed through Blackboard for SOCI 170.

*If multiple sources are cited in your paper, those sources must be alphabetized in the References page.

*If you use outside sources, you should check the “ASA References Guidelines” in Blackboard for proper          ASA formatting for sources in the References page.

*I will not deduct points if the References page is done incorrectly in this assignment, but I will in the second writing assignment.
