As this course is designated as a writing intensive course, there is a writing assignment consistent with the requirement of assignments eligible for submission to the EIU Writing Portfolio. This assignment has the following criteria and must also follow these guidelines to be submitted to the EWP:

  5. Submissions may not be creative pieces, such as poems, short stories, or plays. Papers for this assignment may concentrate on the following areas:
  6. Review and analyze a publicly traded company (security) of your choosing in the context of its investment value, reviewing historical and prospective investment performance. Your assessment should include its investment value to you and will require an analysis of your own risk tolerance and the risk and return prospects of the company or investment. You would answer questions like: description of the company/what do they do? What are their future prospects? Is this company a good investment? Company press releases, annual reports, financial news and analysts reports are possible sources. Please choose a non-financial public company that is large enough to warrant major analytical review resources.

  1. Review and analyze an industry or sector of the economy that encompasses companies of interest to you. Examples would include: pharmaceutical, beverage, tech, etc. In this paper you would review the economic prospect for investing in this industry/sector, the outlook for future growth, companies within the industry, analysts’ reviews, and historical and prospective investment performance.

  1. Review and analyze a financial market event from history that is of interest to you. This could be market crashes/booms, or specific market events-like the great depression/1929 crash, great recession of 2008, the effect of the global pandemic on the markets or other events.
