Reflective Paper on Self-Identity

Professor Instructions:

Topic: You have now learned about various theories of self-identity: Rene Descartes, John Locke, Derek Parfit, Richard Hayes, the Hindus and the Buddhists. In this essay, you need to choose one of the theories of self-identity you have learned about and argue in favor of its truth. You can select any of the philosophies we have covered, explore it more doing your own research and take a position that the theory of self-identity is true. You need to provide at least 2 reasons which support your position and explain how these reasons support the truth of your position. You should raise an objection to the truth of the theory or one of your reasons and respond to that objection. You also need to discuss the impact on you and other people if your position is true.

Length: I don’t specify a length, but usually it should be as long as it needs to be to fully respond to the prompt. I would be surprised to get anything less than 2 pages, but it could be up to 5, depending on your writing style and how well you explain the argument and each step.

Your paper must include:

  • In-text citations (in MLA format) which show that you have used valid sources to formulate and critique your ideas.
  • A MLA format works cited page (which cites the correct chapter of textbook, articles, and films used for that paper)

This essay will be argumentative:

  • Using what you have learned from the readings on this topic and our discussions, you will develop and defend an argument.
  • An example of how such an essay may be structured is as follows: introduction – where you make clear the topic of the essay, your position, the reasons that you think  justify your position, an objection that someone might make to your position, how you plan to respond, and the significance of your argument (i.e., what follows if you’re  right). The following paragraphs of the essay would then spell out each of these five elements of the essay – from your position to its significance).
  • Part of your aim here is to bring the reader to understand why the philosopher holds the position she  does.
  • Another part of the essay is to show are are grappling with the topic, demonstrating an understanding of the topic, and arguing a point or a side of the topic.

Grading rubric for Essays (100 points total):

  3. Is the paper well-thought out and organized?  (20 points)
  4. Has the paper been proof-read?  (10 points)
  5. Are the in-text citations in MLA format?  (15 points)
  6. Is the works cited page in MLA format?  (15 points)

My instructions:

I would like this paper to be in support of Parfait’s Bundle Theory of Self-Identity!

-I attached one reading that can be used as a source for the paper, but the professor also requires that we do our own research. Just one more outside source should be enough for the paper (in support of Parfait’s theory).
