How does the end of the story relate to the relate to the entire text?

When writing about the story keep in mind how do the parts of a text connected to each other and to the text as a whole, and how do the relationships between the parts and the whole create meaning.Your paper should make an argument. Since your reading will be a text-based one, you need to cite specific examples and lines from the text to support your conclusions. In order to do this, you must close reading. 

Questions to ask yourself when writing the essay:

Question 1: How has the author arranged the text? Why are the sections of the story numbered? Do a close reading of one section. What can we learn from that section? How does it relate to the other sections of the story? 

Question 2: What images appear and are repeated in the story? Discuss their significance. How do the images help to structure the story into an organic whole?

Question 3. What words recur frequently and why is that important? How does a recurrence of words help to structure and create meaning for the whole story? How do Diaz’s sentences have multiple meanings? Why is that important? 

Question 5: Discuss point of view in the story.  From whose point of view is the story told? Why is that important? What does it reveal about the character? Do a close reading of a section of the story to draw conclusions about point of view. 

Question 6: What is the most important topic in the story? What is the plot? What is the theme of the story? Why is that significant?
