Tear Soup

This assignment is going to require that you watch a 3-minute clip on YouTube. The clip is called ‘Tear Soup DVD’ and is a clip of a reading out of a book called, “Tear Soup.” You will be required to write a reflection paper on the clip. (The link to the video will be at the bottom of this page.)

To give you a little background information, “Tear Soup, a recipe for healing after loss is a family story book that centers around an old and somewhat wise woman, Grandy. Grandy has just suffered a big loss in her life and so she is headed to the kitchen to make a special batch of Tear Soup. To season her soup Grandy adds memories like the good times and the bad times, the silly and the sad times. After watching the clip, relate it back to what we have discussed in this class. I will provide you with some prompts, but these are just to help you start thinking.

• What do you think the significance is of them pointing out the differences in the way Grandy and Pops reacts to suffering loss?
• Did anything in-particular stand out to you?
• What were you thoughts on the different sizes of pots and how they relate to grief and needs of the bereaved?
• Grandy mentioned that with the size of the pot she was using, she would have room for certain things. Is that important?
• What were your thoughts about the titles of the different books that were shown?
• What was meant by her saying that sometimes when she was in a safe place she even whailed?
