Peer Reviewed Nutrition Article

The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand how research is conducted and reported throughout the sciences but especially in nutrition, a topic that is widely spoken about without proper research first. Additionally, this will help with future research projects as you continue your education. I would like you to read a peer-reviewed research article regarding something that you find interesting in the field of nutrition or something that we have previously read about already this semester. Then you will write a two-to-three-page abstract on the article following the guidelines specified below.

Go to the CWI Library website at From there, you can either start your search using the search bar, or you can go to the databases link to search through different databases (for this topic, you will most likely use academic search complete but others that might be useful are Consumer Health Complete, SPORTDiscus, or Health Source). Once you click search or the database you would like, you will be directed to a search page. Be sure to use the Advanced Search button to help narrow down your search. Please limit your search to:

Scholarly (peer reviewed) journals

Enter your subject in the search box and press enter. You will generate a list of articles which can be accessed online. Some might also be available in a physical copy in the library; if this is the case, there will be a notation in the search result.  You can save your article from here.

Also, if you have questions about the writing piece, you can use the Writing Center by clicking on the link in our Blackboard Course Dashboard titled Tutoring and Writing Support. From there, you can submit your writing to have it reviewed and someone form the writing center should go over it with you.

Here is an example of the proper form for your journal article review. We will continue with APA Format but I’m not concerned with a cover page. It should be two to three pages long, double spaced. The top left should look similar to this:

Your Name

HLTH 220

Following that, you will use the APA citation. These can be generated through the online database that you use or if you use Zotero or something similar. It will generally look similar to this:

Author(s).  (year of publication). Article Title.  Journal name, volume, number, pages. DOI

You may not be able to find some of the parts of the citation as an online published journal might not have a volume or page number. Notice the Hanging Indentation.

Santos, V. C., Levada-Pires, A. C., Alves, S. R., Pithon-Curi, T. C., Curi, R., & Cury-Boaventura, M. F. (2013). Effects of DHA-rich fish oil supplementation on lymphocyte function before and after a marathon race. International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, 23(2), 161–169.

First, summarize the article.

To better understand how the supplementation of fish oil can affect athletes, the authors of this study looked at how a 60-day period of supplementation fish oil (FO) might affect the lymphocyte function of marathon runners. For their research, the authors had a total of 21 runners, 8 of whom were given the supplement for 60 days while the other 13 were considered the control group…

Next, explain and critique the methods used and/or the findings presented.

The authors used a control versus trail group study to evaluate their findings in a statistical means. This allowed them to look at possible placebo effects and evaluate if there were any other biases through the research. They found that there was an effect of…

And finally, offer your opinion on the value of the study. What does it add to our knowledge of nutrition? Do you think this will be useful to you in the future? Can you think of other ways that this could be further researched?
