write in any genre so long as you develop the character in this way.

Screenplay assignment:  Write a 5-10 page screenplay or using screenplay formatting  It can be a one act with a beginning, middle and end or a segment of a larger. Please be sure that you clearly establish what a character wants and how he or she is delayed.  You should have at least three scenes and the plot must progress beyond the beginning.  Also, be sure that you make an effort to develop character, connecting the desire of the main character to some issue within him\her rather than merely to their outside circumstances and be sure to give that person a history. You may write in any genre so long as you develop the character in this way.  Think about all the techniques that might enhance your idea (perhaps, after you have written the initial idea down).  Be careful too that what the audience will actually see on screen is what conveys the character of the person rather than written directives in the screenplay i.e. don’t tell us what character thinks because in a movie, we would not be able to see that. For this assignment you may not use voiceover nor may you create fan fiction.

You will ultimately turn in the rough draft, the revised draft and an explanation of the changes that you made in the draft.  As you can see from the grading below, all three elements factor into the grade.

Build character: Foil

When screenwriters or playwrights foil a character, they put the character in the exact same situation but show them reacting differently. Note: the situation must be exactly the same to be considered “foiling.”

In this clip  (from 24 seconds in to about a minute in) each character is packing a suitcase.  Notice how differently they do it.

That’s the foil.
