Compare and Contrast( it can’t be a research paper has to be something you have knowledge of already)

Write a 5 paragraph essay (600 word minimum) in which you compare and contrast two subjects: (ex: movies, films, or television shows.) Analyze your movies or shows, focusing on 3 key elements or criteria as points of comparison or contrast. In your thesis and especially in your conclusion, make an assertion of which film, movie, or show you feel is better.

Following the rules of argumentation, you should describe both works objectively. Use three criteria to evaluate each, with specific illustrations and details from your TV programs, movies, or films to show how they meet these criteria in each of your body paragraphs. Following the structure of comparison/contrast, your essay should use transitional words indicating contrast between the two works. Combine the modes of evaluation, illustration, comparison/ contrast, and persuasion.

Point of View:

Third-person objective voice, with persuasive tone. Avoid 1st person. Omit 2nd person from all essays.

Style: MLA

General Guidelines:

Remember that you have a  purpose for your comparison or contrast. You are using the similarities and differences to prove the point you made in your thesis. In your thesis statement, be sure that your preference or assertion about the two movies or shows is clearly stated. It is not acceptable to write, “The old and new versions of I am Legend differ greatly.” That is a statement of fact, not an assertion. A better thesis statement would make a claim that one film offers a “better” version than the other.

A subject by subject approach – a paragraph exclusively about one subject, followed by a paragraph completely focused on the other subject — is not sufficient for this assignment. This assignment is a point-by-point reference. Read Chapter 12.7 and see examples on page 124-126 of the textbook. In other words, each body paragraph you write should include both of your subjects being evaluated on a particular criteria. Take special care to choose those three points for your essay.

Introduction:

In your introduction, briefly introduce your TV programs, movies, or films. Then establish three or four criteria you will be using to judge. Include these criteria in your thesis as main points to cover throughout your body paragraphs.

Body:

The topic sentences beginning your body paragraphs are very important. They should connect with the thesis that you wrote by focusing on one of the criteria. Give specific examples and details from scenes in your TV program, movie, or novel showing how it meets the specific criteria. Keep each body paragraph focused on your thesis statement. Work on sentence structure and sentence combining to avoid repetition. A variety of transitions is key to a balanced comparison/contrast essay.
