“I began to suspect that a crucial piece remained missing from America’s long attempts at racial reconciliation,” Tim Madigan wrote in 2001 in the author’s note toThe Burning. “Too many in this country remained as ignorant as I was. Too many were just as oblivious to some of the darkest moments in our history, a legacy of which Tulsa is both a tragic example and a shameful metaphor. How can we heal when we don’t know what we’re healing from?”

The Tulsa Massacre occurred in 1921 What were the most significant events within the previous 50 years in American history that suggest that such a horrific tragedy could possibly occur?   Beyond white anger over the alleged incident that led to the arrest of Dick Rowland, what were the real reasons for the attacks on Greenwood?  (racism is obviously a huge part of it, but please discuss this question at some length)  Who do you believe were most responsible in the white community?   What did the success of Greenwood represent to the white community? And what is the legacy of this tragedy, and why, 100 years later, do many Americans still suffer from “willful ignorance” of both the story and its legacy?  What about American society today makes this story both surprising, and unsurprising?   Finally, include three distinct stories from Madigan’s book that you think that best tell the story of the massacre.

In answering these questions, please provide specific examples from the experiences of the people of Greenwood.  Madigan presents literally dozens of stories of the people involved in the Tulsa Massacre—present quotes from the most effective ones that answer the questions.
