Response to Machines Video Clip

Above is a clip from the documentary “Machines”, directed by Rahul Jain. The documentary is filmed in a textile factory in Gujarat, India. This video illustrates toil.

The author Vishal Mangalwadi defines toil as “mindless, repetitive, dehumanizing labor, that does not include creative imagination”. He claims that the Bible distinguishes work from toil, and essentially argues that “toil” is not desirable and is a result of sin, while “work” is desirable and is God-like.

Do you agree with Mr. Mangalwadi that there is a distinction between work and toil? What is your reaction to the scenes in the video? What questions did it raise for you? What are some ways that humanizing technology could relieve some of the toil in the factory? Can you think of other places that need humanizing technology? What are some good examples of humanizing technology?

Science as a Means of Worship? – Discussion Forum

Class ended today with a quote from Francis Collins of the Human Genome Project:

“I have found there is a wonderful harmony in the complementary truths of science and faith. The God of the Bible is also the God of the Genome. God can be found in the cathedral or in the laboratory. By investigating God’s majestic and awesome creation, science can actually be a means of worship.”

Please share your response to the ideas in this quote, including any questions raised.
