Motivation Theories

Using three of the motivation theories that we covered in class, explain your best, your worst, or any specific workplace experience you had in terms of motivation.  You will need to use at least three different theories and three of more different scenarios, to complete the assignment.  Preferably, you want to have more than one specific example per theory.  At the same time, I suggest using no more than three examples per theory.

If you lack personal work experience you are welcome to interview a family member, or friends.

If you possess no prior work experience, and you do not know anyone who does, you may reference the movie  the “Office Space” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0151804/ (Links to an external site) (Links to an external site.)  Again, purchasing the access to the movie is voluntary and does not entitle to complaints regarding this the course.

Using the motivation theories discussed in class, explain why you, your friend or family member or any participant in the video, was motivated, or not motivated, to perform highly.

Theory 1: Name theory

Theory 2: Name theory

Theory 3: Name theory

As a reminder, the eight motivation theories discussed in the book and in class were:

  1. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
  2. Alderfer’s ERG Theory
  3. Herzberg’s Two-factor Theory
  4. McClelland’s Motive Dispositions Theory
  5. Equity Theory
  6. Expectancy Theory
  7. Reinforcement Theory
  8. Goal Setting Theory

You are welcome to provide detail and information such as on your boss, work, context, environment etc. that affected your motivation. How and why did the situation lead you to perform at your best? Alternatively, how and why did you chose to not be performing according to expectations, or on a merely average level?

Academic references:  We also require you to reference at least one, better two or three, actual academic sources and articles, etc. per theory to undermine and evidence your reporting.  While this is primarily a project report it is supposed to be academically inspired. This is an individual assignment and not teamwork of any sort is permitted.  We require all submissions to go through Turnitin for plagiarism control and any assignment that is plagiarized will receive “zero” points.  Citations that are taken from primary literature need to be very clearly evidenced, such as APA format.

Formatting: All Assignments need to be formatted in Times New Roman font size 12; 1.5 or double-spaced; And contain structural elements, such as: Headlines, sections and subsections; Break up content in paragraphs.  If your report is not formatted properly, the boss may place it back on your desk, and you may need to re-submit it next semester.  With that said, be reminded that “a page is a page and not a paragraph” and “a sentence is a sentence and not a paragraph”.  A paragraph should contain multiple sentences but not span across entire pages and more.  Points will be deducted if paragraphs spanning multiple pages and for once-sentence paragraphs (that are not headlines).  Note that points will also be subtracted, if you are using improper font size or spacing; your essay is not making proper use of structural elements; lacking headlines; or lacking sections and paragraphs.  An introduction and closing statement are recommended.

Structuring elements, such as headlines and sub-headers, structuring paragraphs and introduction as well as closing statements are highly recommended.  That said, a coverage, opening and closing paragraph, as well as reference section are highly recommended
