One of the fundamental paradoxes of ethnic relations is the competing principle of assimilation versus pluralism. On one hand, those who move to the U.S., learn the language, acculturate mainstream culture, and assimilate in every possible way have the highest probability of economic and social success for themselves and their offspring. On the other hand, those who come to the U.S. and maintain their homeland culture, language, and way of life are more likely to find themselves as outsiders, minorities, and even mobility stagnant economic participants.
