Purpose: Some of the central objectives of student-led discussions include: 1) raise the level of student
involvement in the seminar; (2) develop students skills in formulating and expressing ideas and opinions; (3)
help students learn to evaluate the logic of and evidence for their own and others positions; (4) develop
listening and critical thinking skills; (5) increase students ability to synthesize complex readings; (6)
develop motivation for further learning

PowerPoint Presentation Should Address the Following and Expand Points Raised in Lecture

a) Overall claims made in the readings: Consider the following questions: What are some of the general
claims made in the readings? What are the dominant themes? Are there differences between that weeks
readings and the ones from previous weeks? Similarities?

b) Provide examples from the readings. Give two or three specific textual references where you might
locate some of the claims made.

c) Your critical reflection/analysis of these examples. How can you situate these readings in conversation
with larger issues discussed in class? How can you apply some of the claims to present day contexts?
Can you provide specific examples of present-day issues?

d) Raise three questions or discussion points to generate class dialogue. Consider raising questions and
points that are rooted in the readings but make links to large issues.
