Even though most of us agree that it would be immoral to make the world uninhabitable for future people, can we talk meaningfully of those future generations having a right that we not do this. After all, our remote descendants are not yet alive and thus cannot claim a right to a livable environment. In fact, since these generations do not yet exist, they cannot at present, it seems, be said to have any interests at all. How can they then have rights? Can we talk meaningfully of future generations having a right that we not despoil the world they inherit?

According to Shaw and Barry, while employers bear the responsibility of terminating the employment of workers who won’t discharge their contractual obligation, they are also obliged to terminate workers "as painlessly as possible." 
 

But why is this true? Where does the obligation rest? One possible justification would be utilitarian; if we could perform either (but not both) of two actions in the same circumstances, and one produced less pain to everyone affected by the action than the other, then we ought to perform that action that results in the least overall pain. Is there any other possible basis for the obligation to terminate as painlessly as possible?

What moral obligations, if any, do employees have to the people with whom they work?  What obligations, if any, do employees have to people with whom they have no direct relationship, and for whom they have no professional or organizational relationship?  For example, what moral obligations do you have to workers in third world countries who produce many of the items that are purchased in the United States? Would you be willing to spend as much as twice (or ten times) as much for your clothing if that was required for these workers to be treated fairly?
