Instructions:

The film analysis is a 3–4 page paper that functions as an applied exercise in your understanding of human communication. You should analyze a film of your choice (please share your choice with me) or chose one of the suggested films listed below. Your film should demonstrate the complexities of human communication theories and relationships. A suggested way to limit your choices is to find films with a storyline focusing on relationships family, friends, co-workers, or romantic. You will apply a theory or concept to apply to your analysis. Full length films on Netflix, Amazon or GSU streaming services like Kanopy or Swank are resources. There are also films available on DVD in GSU libraries, as well as your personal collections. Whatever film you watch, give yourself time to view it at least twice.

Assignment:

Format:  Write a 3–4-page analysis, double-spaced and paragraphed to distinguish main ideas from supporting ideas. Papers should be written in the third person and checked for spelling and grammatical errors. The paper must contain at least 15 communication terms and must have a minimum of three references in addition to the course textbook. You must highlight, underline, italicize or bold your selections.

Select a film and organize your analysis using the guidelines listed:

a.    Provide a brief overview of the film and why you selected it for this assignment.

b.    Discuss the film’s portrayal of the interpersonal relationship(s) you will chose to focus.

c.     Describe how the relationship develops over the course of the film using specific examples

d.    You must apply concepts and/or theories of human communication used in this course. For example, social penetration theory is a way to frame the development of a relationship between characters or how conflict management plays a role in the character’s relationships. The non-verbal communication of characters is also a way to discuss the interactions in the film.

e.     Describe one myth or misconception (in your opinion) about human communication that is portrayed in the film.

f.      Give the characters advice for using competent communication behaviors in their relationship based on the theory you have selected. For example, if the character’s avoidance conflict style is the issue and how an alternative communication method would alter the outcome.

g.    Other things to keep in mind: You do not have to restate the film’s entire plot or provide a film review. If you chose to use a film summary from an outside source, such as IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes, be sure to cite the source (i.e., According to IMDB, the Fault of Our Stars “is a heartwarming film centered on…”). Avoid passing it off as your own work.
