discussion post 8

So, this weeks discussion post is not for the faint of heart

As you have learned in the textbook in Chapter 9 that cardiovascular disease, and the health outcomes related to it heart attack and stroke are the main causes of death worldwide. You have also learned that these are diseases of lifestyle and that they can be largely prevented through behavior change.  We know what healthy behaviors are, but we do not engage in them. Often, we want to, and we make New Years resolutions or join a gym or say Ill start eating healthy on Monday. But change is hard and we cannot often maintain it.  This weeks discussion takes a deep dive into what creates lasting behavior change.

For this discussion you must go to this link

(Links to an external site.) and listen to the American Psychological Association podcast Speaking of Psychology: How science can help you change your behavior for the better, with Katy Milkman, PhD.  https://www.apa.org/research/action/speaking-of-psychology/better-behavior (Links to an external site.)

After carefully listening (or reading the transcript) you must answer these questions deeply and thoughtfully. Make sure to answer each part of the prompt.

Discussion Post Reaction:

  1. Milkman says that we see our lives as a series of chapters. What are yours? Put your life in chapters from your birth until now. Select one of those chapters and explain why it was a growth chapter, how it shaped your life story, and why?
  2. What is temptation bundling and how does it work? Give an example from Dr. Milkmans research and one from your own life. What is the weakness of temptation bundling for long term behavior change?
  3. Think about your defaults and how you could reset them to actually promote change, describe how you would do this.
  4. Milkman says behavior change is not one and done and suggests we need to think about how we approach treating a disease in order to better make lasting changes in our behavior. What does this mean to you?
