Within public health nursing, there are many different scopes of practice. These scopes of practice include home health, school health, community health, among many others (Stanhope /& Lancaster, 2016). Public health nursing encompasses many different aspects as the care focus is on the entirety of the community and the overall health. Public health nursing also focuses on communicable diseases and monitoring their spread (Stanhope /& Lancaster, 2016). Community nursing is a smaller community of public health nursing that a nurse cares for. The community nurse will be available to anyone within a specific community and will assess items like what was completed on the windshield survey (Stanhope /& Lancaster, 2016). Within both community and public health nursing, there are different subsections of nursing care that depend on the population that the nurse cares for.

Home health nurses care for patients that are typically home-bound or have additional health care needs that they need assistance with (Stanhope /& Lancaster, 2016). Home health nurses help bridge the gap between inpatient and clinic nursing and the patient caring for themselves without assistance. The home health nurse focuses on the improvement of condition and treatment while providing education to the patient so that they can potentially care for themselves in a set period of time (Stanhope /& Lancaster, 2016).

School nurses also care for a special population; that being children or young adults at school (Stanhope /& Lancaster, 2016). School nurses help to make decisions as to whether or not the student is healthy enough to be at school and is able to learn appropriately. The school nurse does do some mild education with the students about hand hygiene, but can also provide education to the parents if the child is sent home for whatever reason (Stanhope /& Lancaster, 2016).

and a 150 word reply to this

There are some distinctive differences between the different types of nursing that can be as simple as where they work or what patients they see. For instance, while home health, school, and public health nurses are considered a part of community health they give more centralized care. A home health nurse travels to the patient’s homes and cares for their health needs there while a school nurse is in charge of the health of the children and staff in a particular school. Someone in public health nursing can work for many different types of companies from voluntary organizations to government agencies, their focus is the health and wellness of the public as a whole and the access to proper care and prevention (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2016).

While all of these professions’ interests are the community in which they work, there are broader scopes of practice in each field and different responsibilities that can go with the job that they are doing. There is also the aspect beyond healthcare, advocation. With each different department of nursing, the nurses advocate for different people/populations and in different ways. For example, in the school setting, one might advocate for better access to nutrition or health programs. Whereas, with a community health nurse, their primary focus for advocation would be the entire community and the access to healthcare, programs, or proper funding. Therefore, to understand exactly all of what each nurse does, one must first understand where and for who these nurses practice.
