Character Analysis on “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”- characters Arnold Friend or Connie

Carefully read Joyce Carol Oates’ short story “Where are You Going, Where have You Been?”  (available on Blackboard!) Your task is to write a character analysis of Connie or Arnold. You can find some scholarly articles about this selection that will surprise you in the Content area of Blackboard. 

Your thesis should make an overall claim that the bulk of the paper is dedicated to proving. Consider this example from a different short story: “In Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace,” Matilde suffers from hubris, a singular character flaw that ultimately leads to her downfall.” Topic sentences, then, demonstrate how her pride manifests, loosely grouped into three paragraphs of non-sequential textual proofs and commentary. Follow MLA format, citing parenthetical page numbers, and include a Work Cited page.

Do not summarize the story. I have read it many times, and I doubt you could rewrite it any better than Oates’ version. Instead, make a claim about either character, and support it with specific evidence. Feel free to use direct quotations sparingly to support your claims. In a paper this length, 4-5 tightly-clipped quotations should be sufficient.
