This Close-Reading Essay will give you a chance to exercise your skills in close-reading. The essay should be no more than 1000 words, not including the works cited.We have, and will, explore many different ideas about heroes and what it means to be heroic. What about the opposite?
Using any ONE of the texts in this course, consider the concept of villainy. If heroes and, perhaps more importantly, myths about heroes form foundational aspects of culture and society, what about those who oppose them? Make an argument for how we should understand and engage with the position of villains/villainy in one of the texts, using close-reading to support your argument. Why is that?-What makes a villain villainous (in the text)? Why is that?-What is the dynamic between heroes and villains (in the text)?-
Are villains even necessary (in the text)?

You may find it helpful to remind your reader of the context of a particular situation or quotation, but there is no need to summarize the entirety of the text.
