The movie HERITAGE AFRICA is prelude to our discussion of European Colonialism in Africa. You may find echoes of Achebe Things Fall Apart in the movie. Pay attention in particular to the effects of European Colonial Domination on Africa.

Students are required to watch this movie and write up a 2-page report on the movie.

Guidelines in writing response papers to documentaries/movies

Introduction:

It might be helpful to start your response paper by giving a brief but accurate summary of the documentary in the opening statements of your paper. Here, I will like to see some basic information about the documentary, including its title, producer, characters, and when the documentary was first made.

Evaluating the documentary

After the introductory section, you will now begin a critical discussion of the documentary. This section of your response paper should present a comprehensive evaluation of the documentary. Your evaluations and discussions will tell the reader that you have clearly watched and understood the documentary.

Your paragraphs should properly explain your position or response to the documentary, backed with evidence and examples. It might help to use each paragraph for a particular or a specific idea and a few related evidences.

In your discussions, you can either support or question the view of the producer of the film. However, this has to be well discussed in a way that your readers can understand you without even have watched the documentary.

The conclusion

The conclusion of your response paper should present a summary of your position on the documentary. This can be done by restating the focus of your paper and the key points that are discussed in the body paragraphs. Remember that the conclusion should just be short and not open a fresh discussion. Avoid introducing a new idea in the conclusion since that would confuse readers and alter the flow of ideas in the paper.

On the final note you can also compare the documentary with others in the same genre or subject in order to make readers have a better understanding of the review.
