Week 2 analysis: Choose a feature-length film in the Fantasy genre.  Use the worksheet provided below to make notes on your film as you watch. Your full essay should be between 800 – 1200 words long.  Your essay should also follow the format below.

  • Include a brief introduction of your film.
  • A short summary of the story (brief discussion of the 3 acts).
  • A full discussion of the Fantasy genre.
  • A full discussion of Mise en scene.  And finally, a conclusion.

Focus: Fantasy & Mise en scene

    Essay/Analysis format:

    Brief introduction-

What film did you watch? When was it produced? Who wrote/directed? How does it conform to the Fantasy genre? Where is the Ontological break?

    Brief film summary-

Please produce a brief (less than 400 words) summary of your film. Who are the main characters? What happens in the beginning? What happens in the middle? What happens at the end? This should be a basic discussion of the 3 act structure of your film (Setup, Conflict, Resolution. See your Plot and Story lecture from Week 1).

    Body/Discuss- Fantasy

Here, discuss the genre of your film using your text lectures to guide your discussion. What are your film’s visual and narrative characteristics?  Expand on your comments from your introduction. Include examples from the film which serve as support for your discussion of Fantasy films. What type of Fantasy film is it (Heroic, Epic, Earthbound, etc.)? Please discuss particular scenes which you feel highlight the conventions of the Fantasy genre.

    Body/Discuss- Mise en scene

Here, discuss the visual language of your film using your text lectures to guide your discussion. Discuss the lighting, costumes, locations, props, color, etc. How does the mise en scene contribute to the story? How does the mise en scene reveal information about the characters on screen (for example, what does a character’s wardrobe tell you about who they are?)

    Brief conclusion-

    Wrap it up!
