Final Exam Questions “ Counterinsurgency in International Relations

There are two questions that you have to answer. Each answer should be between 4-5 pages, for a total of 8-10 pages. Your answers need to be double-spaced, with 12 point Times New Roman Font and one-inch margins. You must include parenthetical citations for the books/papers that you use to make your argument and include a bibliography at the end of the exam. Please note that the bibliography and title page do not count towards your page total. Also, note that you do not need to use external sources in your answers; you should be able to effectively answer these questions using the material that we have read for class. 


  1. This term, we have read about many different insurgent groups. While some insurgent organizations utilize terrorism as a tactic, other groups largely refrain from committing terrorism. Why do some insurgent organizations utilize terrorism, while others utilize it much less or not at all? Also, why is suicide terrorism utilized by some insurgent organizations and not by others? Make sure to discuss at least 3 different insurgent groups in your answer. Your answer should be 4-5 double spaced pages. 
  2. This term, we have read about a variety of approaches that states can take as they conduct counterinsurgency. Discuss the military and political approaches that states can utilize as a means of combatting insurgencies. Based on the cases we have discussed/read about, which tactics seem the most effective? Which seem to be the least effective? Why? Your answer should be 4-5 double-spaced pages.
