Discussion 3.1

Discussion 1: Major Depressive Disorder is recognized as a mood disorder. Symptoms of Major Depression

 include:

  1. Change in sleep
  2. Changes in appetite
  3. Lack of concentration
  4. Loss of energy
  5. Lack of interest
  6. Low self esteem
  7. Hopelessness
  8. Change in movement
  9. Physical aches and pains

For this discussion post, you will be asked to review the .

Then you will need to read the story Jack, A life Kept Down, on page 205 in your textbook, Essentials of

Abnormal Psychology. Once you have reviewed both the DSM-V and the story, you need to provide a well

outline discussion post, minimum of 150 words, identifying which depressive symptoms you see Jack

experiencing

within his state of depression. You will then be asked to identify two different treatment modalities that

someone within the mental health profession may utilize in order to assist Jack with his depression.

Discussion 2: Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) shares many of the same symptoms as Major

Depressive Disorder but, holds some differences. The depressive symptoms for Persistent Depressive Disorder are not as severe as Major Depressive Disorder and the symptoms are present from a longer period of time.

Symptoms for PDD must be present for a minimum of two years.

For this discussion post, you will be asked to complete a Becks Depression Inventory (Assessment Tool) for

someone who holds a Persistent Depressive Disorder. Once you have reviewed and hold a well-rounded

understanding of Persistent Depressive Disorder, you will then review the assessment and answer the questions as someone who holds this disorder. This will allow you to understand what symptomology a Mental Health

Professional is looking for and how they assess and determine between a Major Depressive Episode and

Persistent Depressive Disorder. After completing the assessment, you will be asked to discuss your end rating

and how you came to this.
