Evolutionary analysis of the Delta and Delta Plus variants of the SARS-CoV-2 viruses

The goal of this report is to allow students to explore the world of microbiology and discover new areas of interest. I encourage students to explore the scientific literature and  find a microbe (or a microbiome) of your interest to detail in this report.

REPORT FORMAT

Build the information as a slide deck.  Each “slide” is one page of the document.  You can build it in Power Point slides or Keynote and save as a PDF file before uploading it to Canvas.

IMPORTANT: Include a figure for each of the slide, except the bibliography.  Provide a reference to the source of the figure.  You cannot copy sentences directly from the source even if you use quotation marks.  Write every information on your slide deck in your own words.

  1. Pick a microbe (virus, bacteria, fungi, protozoan, algae, parasite) of interest.
    • The only requirement is that the publication on the microbe must have used bioinformatics to analyze the data.
    • The data analyzed in the paper can be DNA, RNA, or Protein from that microbe or a microbiome.
  2. Prepare a slide deck with the following:
  • Slide 1: Title (include a catchy title that describes to core of the information presented) and Your Name
  • Slide 2: Background: Information that answers the question: What is your report about? Focus on the key aspect of the report. Have a couple of sentences that address the core of what you are about to report. This background, so, it is
  • Slide 3: Goal and Significance: What were the scientists trying to accomplish with this study? In other words what is the goal of the study? Second, What is the significance of this study? Meaning, how does the goal of the study contribute to the body of the scientific literature in this field?
    • Make sure to use in-text citation for sources that you use for any information included in any of your slides. You can either number your citations or include the last name of the first author followed by the year of the publication.  You must have a minimum of 5 citations, where  at least 1 citation comes from a primary, peer-reviewed scientific paper.
  • Slide 4: Methods: Use a Flowchart to create one slide with the Workflow from start to end of the study (from the paper). Include only the key steps and a brief description of what that step is (e.g. name of the technique and its purpose).  This should be really summarized. No extensive descriptions of the methods.  Include the gene(s) or genome that were used in the study, methods used for the bioinformatics analysis.
  • Slide 5Results:  Choose two or three figures from the paper that best describe the results reported.  Then provide a sentence or two summarizing what was the key finding from each figure.
    • Describe the big picture about the trend(s) you observe from the figures. Provide a sentence or two that best summarize(s) the core of the data.
  • Slide 6: Conclusions: Among the key results included in slide 5, what was the take home message from this paper? What was the key conclusion from the findings?
    • Perhaps you found a figure that gives a good description of the concluding remarks.  Provide a brief explanation about the message in the figure.
  • Slide 7Bibliography. Minimum of 5 references. Each reference listed in the bibliography must be cited in the body of the report. Use a standard citation style (Links to an external site.) (e.g. MLA, APA, etc). Remember that at least 1 of your citations must come from a primary, peer-reviewed scientific article.
