Prompt: Choose two guest lectures from the first half of the course and write a paper that summarizes each of the lectures by drawing on both the presentations and all the readings for that week, and then bring them in to conversation with each other using one (or two) common theme. For example, you may choose to discuss how two lectures situate any of the following themes in their arguments: nationalism, geography, capitalism, colonialism, securitization, neoliberalism, social movements, globalization, or culture. You are not limited to the previous list of themes—they are intended just to get you started brainstorming. Our recommendation is to pick just one theme (or a maximum of two themes) and to compare the two guest lectures and readings based on how they discuss and analyze that particular theme. A strong paper is analytical and not just descriptive. You may use outside sources, but remember to primarily cite class materials (guest lectures, instructor lectures, readings) appropriately using your choice of citation style. This paper is worth 20% of your final grade, and is due: 5:00pm on Tuesday October 26, 2021 via Canvas.

Grading Rubric:

Structure/Organization: Your paper should be no less than 1200 words and no more than 1500 words. If you write less than 1200 or more than 1500 your grade will be reduced by half a letter grade for every 50 words you go under or over the limits. The paper should be comprised of three sections:

Section 1 (400-500 words): Summarize the first guest lecture you are using and bring it into conversation with all the readings for that week. Define the most important key terms for the topic and explain how the presenter and readings used those terms to elaborate on their topic.

Section 2 (400-500 words): Summarize the second guest lecture you are using and bring it into conversation with all the readings for that week. Define the most important key terms for the topic and explain how the presenter and readings used those terms to elaborate on their topic.

Section 3 (400-500 words): Bring the two guest lectures into conversation through a specific theme that both are addressing. Examples of a theme to compare the two lectures on could be: nationalism, geography, globalization, neoliberalism, capitalism, colonialism, securitization, culture, or social movements.

Thesis Statement: The argument or purpose of the paper must be clearly stated, fully developed and relevant to the prompt. A thesis statement should be in the introductory paragraph and should illustrate the organization of the essay.

Ideas, Support & Evidence: Main ideas must be sufficiently supported by course material (i.e. lectures and readings). The evidence supplied should show a depth of understanding. The essay must make clear connections between course concepts and empirical case studies.

Grammar, Writing Style & Citations: Essay must be free from grammatical errors and utilize a formal writing style. Each sentence should be structured effectively with appropriate sentence length/paragraph length. Citations should be in text and simple: after engaging an idea in your paper, cite the original reference as follows: (Hutchinson, 33) or (Clarno lecture 9-30-21) or (Al-Bulushi lecture 10-7-21). There is no need to include a formal bibliography at the end of the paper—just use the in-text citation system referred to above. You MUST engage in depth and cite at least 2 guest lectures, 2 instructor lectures, and 4 readings in your paper.
