Essay Requirements:
o You must analyze the rhetoric of 2 separate Primary Sources (texts authored by,
or featuring the words of, your approved figure) from 2021. Provide equal
attention to both texts.
• Only 1 of the following sources may be used: 1 social media post (Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.) and 1 news article/report (print or
online) → Search for original sources!
o Give equal focus to 2/3 of the rhetorical elements: pathos (appeal to emotion),
ethos (appeal to authority), or logos (appeal to logic).
o You must discuss 2 literary or rhetorical devices at work in your selected texts.

o The essay must include 4 paragraphs; you need an introduction (with a thesis
statement), 2 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Important Notes:
➢ Word Count Penalty: You will lose 1% for every 10 words over or under the required
word count for the essay. Your title, submission information, and Works Cited page do
not count toward the limit.
➢ Thesis Statement: As in all essays, this effort requires that you have a strong thesis: an
original claim about the topic that goes beyond a simple observation. This essay’s success
depends on the critical analysis of rhetoric, not on the summary of the texts.
➢ Style: Your essay must include in-text citations, proper formatting, and a Works Cited
