Argument/Persuasion Essay

Purpose: An Expository essay is one in which you explore an idea by providing evidence for it. In the case of the Argument/Persuasion style, this is done through a series of reasons that support your belief regarding a given topic.

Please note that this is different from an Illustrative essay (a prior assignment in the course) in that your purpose here is to change minds; so, keep in mind when composing your work that you are writing to an audience who primarily knows about the topic but disagrees with you.

Hence, you are not looking to impartially educate on the subject, but rather to change the reader’s way of thinking to align with your own.

For this Argument/Persuasion writing assignment, you may select any Topic you wish and you may argue in support of any side you wish.  Consider this when developing your initial Outline for the work.  Any debatable issue is fine; please do not feel that you must choose something that “seems right” for a collegiate setting.  It can be something personal, like an issue affecting you at your place of employment, or something debated nationwide.  However, you must choose a side and argue it: do not present the Topic from different perspectives or beliefs, as this could likely resemble a Classification approach (divided into parties, supporters, or advocacy groups).

Please note: your personal beliefs will in no way affect your grade on the assignment. Your essay will be scored Contextually based solely on how you argue, not on what you believe in.

Establish develop your Focus in a complete Intro paragraph, ending with a full 3-pronged Thesis sentence clearly stating the Topic (what is being argued), what side you will be arguing in favor of, and the 3 or more Main Points (Reasons you are correct) that will be presented in the Body of the work. 

Then, your 3 (or more) Main Points (1 per Body paragraph) will offer these central arguments in a complete, detailed fashion.   To develop and present these arguments, consider Part 6 (Strategies), Section 38 (Arguing) of the text.

As always, be sure to recap what these Main Points/reasons have been in a full Conclusion paragraph at the end of the work.
