English 102 Final Exam

Description

This exam is made up of four short-answer questions, each worth 25 points.  In some of the questions, you will be asked to refer to the PowerPoint presentations that have been uploaded.  Please study them and use them to answer the questions.  The completed exam will be due no later than Monday, June 7 by 11:59 pm on Turnitin.com.  

Question 1:

Please explain how Elena Ferrante uses the Literary Symbol (as defined in your “How to Read Fiction” PowerPoint) in My Brilliant Friend, and explain what the symbol you’ve chosen symbolizes.

Question 2:
Read Mary Oliver’s “In Blackwater Woods” carefully. Referencing your “How to Read Poetry” PowerPoint, (a) identify one metaphor and explain what it signifies; (b) explicate one stanza; (c) explain how the white space functions in the poem.

Question 3:

Please explain how Agape and Philautia feature in Langston Hughes’s poem, “I, Too.”  As always, feel free to refer to your “Kinds of Love” PowerPoint for guidance.

Question 4:

Consider Viet Thanh Nguyen’s short story, “The Transplant,” from his collection, The Refugees.  The story ends with “empty hands” and fraud.  What does this mean?

Extra-Credit Question (worth 30 points—yes, the equivalent of one missed quiz and one missed discussion post, so Happy Summer Break to you!):

1. Which type of love, and its accompanying piece of literature, most interested you this semester and why? (10 points)
2. Do you believe Ludus should be considered a type of love? Why or why not? (10 points)
3. We have studied Philia and Storge in My Brilliant Friend, especially as to how it applies to Lila and Elena’s relationship, but do you see how an element of Pragma also features in their relationship? How do you see this as a possibility? (10 points)
