     5.  All of these audio listening examples and You Tube audio/video examples are obviously diverse from the standpoint of the decade in which they were/are popular. They are at the same time very different and yet in a larger sense very much the same. It has been said that modern popular music is more about visual presentation than it is about musical interest and quality. Do you agree with this? We all have had our personal emotional, entertainment, and artistic experiences with popular music. Using those experiences, perhaps your critical thoughts and material learned from reading the textbook (or some combination thereof), please write a short essay about the diversity of, but also the common role of Popular music in our culture. (100 to 150 words – or more)

Part 2

  1.  What is indigenous folk culture?

     3. Describe the relationship between the drumming, singing, dancing and costuming.

     5.  Name as many cultural and musical factors as you can that have influenced this Reggae music. Use your textbook. Discuss its place in American music.    

     6.  Listen to (#30) “Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio” and (#31) “Arboles de la Barranca”            

     7.  Two Mexican styles; ‘Tex-Mex’ and ‘Mariachi’. How are they similar? How are they different? Which do you like the best and why?    Cajun” dance feel. Describe as best you can the difference between these two Zydeco sounds.

    10. Discuss the two diverse musical cultures in southwest Louisiana that merged to form this music?    

    11.  Listen to Sergio Cuevas of Paraguay, Indian Harp (#33)“Pajaro Campana”.

    12.  Pay attention to the use of extensive syncopation by the harp. Pay attention to the use of duple meter (two-beat) and triple meter (three-beat) by the other instruments and singer. Rhythmically which do you hear the most; the two-beat, the three-beat, both (mixed meter), the syncopation? or a balance? Discuss. The above is music from three countries in South America. What differences in the instruments and their sounds do you notice compared to the instruments and sounds in the earlier North American and Mexican examples in the above Discussion? Describe. This is a bit of a complex question. Do the best you can based solely upon what you hear and see.

If prompted log in with your UCO student user name and password. This documentary video, and the others in the series, are the best I have ever seen on the history of music in America. It deals directly with everything we are studying in Chapter 7.

    14.  Watch the entire video (about 50 minutes), take notes as you watch, and write an essay describing your impressions. If possible write a balance between historical facts you already knew, and information that is new to you. Your essay should be about 175 to 200 words. If you wish you  compose your essay offline, using Microsoft Word, spell check, etc. Do not ‘attach’ your document, but copy and paste into the Discussion Topic HTML window below the other questions you have answered. This makes it much easier for the class to read each others postings, and then write responses to them. Generally your grammatical accuracy will be better as well.

NOTE: While there will be no assignment over Episode Two: “This Land Is Your Land” and Episode Three: “These Times They Are A-Changin'”  of the American Roots Music series, I urge you to watch them when you can make time.
