Cognitive Dev. and Piaget

After reading about Cognitive Dev. And Piaget’s Theory (see textbook, PPT lectures, video) plan a field trip for 2 groups of children.

The first group consists of children ages 3 & 4 [Preoperational Stage]

The second group consists of children ages 7 -9 yrs. Old [Concrete Stage]

You can select the place you visit, however you will be visiting the same place with each group.

1. Describe the field trip [place] you will be visiting.

2. Utilizing the stages of Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory, describe how you will make the trip you plan a meaningful learning experience for the preoperational group.

3. Utilizing the stages of Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory, describe how you will make the trip you plan a meaningful learning experience for the concrete group.

4. Think of open-ended questions relevant to each age group, and come up with at least 3 you would ask as a teacher relevant to your trip focus,with a goal of extending and assessing children’s knowledge.

5. Provide 2 examples of how you would extend the field trip experience beyond the trip. Another words, how will you utilize the experiences of the trip to extend children’s thinking, extend learning concepts, etc. for each age group based on how they process information, think, and understand their world.

The point is to demonstrate that you understand Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory; specifically the pre-operational and concrete stages and how this knowledge assists a teacher in planning appropriate curriculum and learning experiences for children based on their abilities, skills, thought processes, and cognitive stages of development.

You will then describe the trip – and how you would prepare for such a trip [before, during, and after] to ensure it is a meaningful [and DAP] learning experience based on the pre-operational child and the concrete child’s stage[s] of cognitive development.
