TED Talk Assignment

• Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is for you to gain knowledge via viewing t an

informative TED Talk on a topic relevant to the material covered by this course (which I will provide you with). You’ll be sharing what you learned via typing a 2-3-page paper on the topic.

• Directions:

Find a TED Talk on a topic relevant to this course. Make sure the talk is

at least ~15 minutes in length, it can be longer but try not to use one much shorter than this.

• Make sure the host is a reputable expert in their field.
  • If you are uncertain as to whether or not a TED Talk is relevant, please share any questions you may have with me before you start writing the paper so I can provide further clarification from my professor or TA about anything that may be confusing about this prompt.)
    • Type and electronically submit a 2-3-page paper on what you learned from the TED Talk.
      •  Submit it as a WORD or PDF document.

• Format of paper:

• Make sure it has the standard TITLE PAGE used for this course

• Length: Minimum 2 full pages and maximum 3 pages
• Typed, double spaced.
• Margins: 1in, all around
• Pagination: make sure you have page number on every page, your choice as to whether or not you put a page number on the title page; numbers to appear either at the top right or bottom right corner.

• No running head
• Font: 12 point, Times New Roman or comparable.
• You may use the first person.
• Use WORD or PDF (PDF format is preferred)

1. The first paragraph should be an introduction to the topic. It ought to contain:

• The topic of the TED Talk
• How you came to find it, why you are interested in it.
• How it is relevant specifically to material covered in this course
• Who the TED Talk is oriented toward (general public, medical students, parents, therapists, etc.)?

1. The second, third and fourth paragraphs should discuss three central ideas or pieces of information that you learned from the TED Talk.

• The first line of each of these paragraphs sought to begin with a phrase something like “the first thing I found interesting or learned was . . . .”
  • The first line of each of these three paragraphs ought to clearly tell the reader what the main idea is for that paragraph.

• Each paragraph should be at least 5-6 sentences of thoughtful dialogue;
  • ***no “filler sentences” that simply restate something already mentioned or that do not add something new to a discussion***

– Provide examples; mention why you found this item interesting, what new did you learn, etc.?

1. The final fifth paragraph briefly mentions, again, why the topic is relevant to material taught in this course, cite exactly how it is related.

• For example, you might mention a certain chapter in the text or material covered in a lecture or student presentation.
  • Then, close this final paragraph with any personal reflections of your own.

• How might you use it?
• What questions does it answer for you?
• Who would you recommend this to? Etc.

The file named “TED Talk Assignment Directions” is the essay prompt. The seven other files I’ve uploaded is material from my class you can use to help write paper and base your chosen TED Talk video (at least ~15 minutes in length and the host is a reputable expert in their field) off of.

Here’s some additional general paper description info:

You will be viewing a TED Talk on any topic related to this course and writing a 3-page paper on your listening experience. Just make double sure that the TED Talk covers topics related to physiology, neurology, hormones, genetics (etc.) insofar as those biological mechanisms affect human behavior. If the TED Talk does not have a biological component, do not do it. You will not receive any credit. If in doubt, share the topic with the professor ahead of time.
