Description
I am not really sure how to format this essay and put it into words.
What is your current career and why do you wish to transition to a career in nursing at this point in your life?
I just graduated with a degree in Public Health and I am currently a CNA (certified nurse assistant) and I work in a skilled nursing facility. I enjoy helping people, especially during this pandemic when people in nursing homes are isolated from their friends and families. I want to increase my knowledge and skills in the healthcare field so I can help more people. I am passionate about helping my community (San Francisco students) get back into school so I also took on the role of a COVID-19 tester for San Francisco Unified School District students so that they can back into school as soon as possible. I am also having an externship at Kentfield Hospital (San Francisco) to expand my knowledge as a CNA in an acute care setting where I am able to care for patients who need constant support and monitoring.
Describe how you plan to handle the return to school and the demands of full-time study in an accelerated program.
I recently graduated from a 4-year university so I think that I am able to get back into school again. During my undergrad, I was able to gain skills such as organization, communication, and public speaking. I also worked part-time and/or full-time while balancing out my academics life pretty well. I also took online classes for about three semesters due to COVID-19 and since this program is hybrid, I think it will be perfect for me since I have experience in both in-person and online formats.
Describe the characteristics you believe you possess that will make you a good nurse and a student leader?
I am extremely passionate about helping others. I am open-minded and willing to learn new things. I am empathetic towards others as well. I have great teamwork and communication skills. I just graduated with a B.S in Public Health and I learned many things that would make me a good nurse. This made me want to work with people who are disproportionately affected by health problems and to find the root cause of these problems. Since I majored in Public Health I was able to work with multiple people from my class (group work, presentations, and research) which I was able to gain good people skills. In the nursing field, I will be working with people from all walks of life. I think I am confident with working with other people and giving directions to others.
Provide an example of when you believe you demonstrated your leadership qualities.
I am always willing to take on bigger assignments in my nursing home job when we are understaffed. I also volunteered to be in the Red Zone (COVID-19 outbreak zone) at the nursing home to help my patients with COVID-19. During my undergrad, I was able to work mostly in groups. I always listen to other people’s suggestions and include every group member in the discussion. I help my group stay organized by setting up reminders and making sure everyone has a role in the group project.
