Prompt: What Made Alexander the Great “Great”?
Sources: 3 ancient texts/artifacts that prove why/how he was “great”
The two books we used in class were The World of the Ancient Greeks by John Camp and Elizabeth Fisher and The Greeks: an Introduction to Their Culture 3rd Edition by Robin Sowerby. These books are not required but they do contain the types of sources for which he is looking.
ESSENTIAL format
Write one single-spaced page (as if your script for a 5–6 minute presentation)—or TWO double-spaced pages is completely fine. Cite ancient texts by their author, title, and standard form of reference (book and line/paragraph/section numbers—do not cite by the page number of the translation), and for artifacts, if found in our books, for this informal paper, cite the page and/or illustration number in Camp & Fisher or Sowerby (it is ideal to be as thorough and precise as possible with all citation of ancient sources, but, as you can see in Camp & Fisher, they often merely cite earlier publications).
Introductory Paragraph: briefly introduce your topic (assume that your reader has no knowledge of the subject). Ancient Piece of Evidence #1: introduce your first Anc. Piece of Evidence, describe it, put it in its ancient context— the what, who, when, where details—, then point out and explain its significance for your theme/topic. Write another such paragraph for your second Anc. Piece of Evidence, and a third paragraph for your third one. Concluding Paragraph: succinctly review your topic and how these particular three Anc. Pieces of Evidence show what you have learned and think about all the material that we have been studying about ancient Greek culture.
Philip II and/or Alexander: Why don’t we call Philip “Great” or Why do we call Al. “Great”? 1. a key passage, such as Demosthenes’ description of Philip (Passage of the Day for 10/7) or a key passage on Alexander, such as Arrian Anab. 7.29 (Pass. of the Day for 10/9) 2. a key artifact illustrating Philip or Al’s “greatness” (lectures)
3. another key passage or artifact
