Subjectivism

In chapter 19 of text A you learned about an ethical theory known as subjectivism. Write a single, multi-page essay in which you: (i) give a proper definition of the theory, and (ii) give a thorough explanation and logical evaluation of each of the following objections to (or criticisms of) the theory.

1. The theory blurs the distinction between thinking that something is moral/immoral and its being moral/immoral. (the problem of infallibility)

2. The theory renders moral criticism and proselytism senseless. (the problem of equivalence/contradiction)

3. The theory does not allow for moral progress or slippage. (the problem of progress/slippage)

4. The theory makes morality completely arbitrary. (the problem of questioning commitments)

These objections (or criticisms) can also be applied to subjectivism’s sister theory, conventionalism (aka, social/cultural relativism), but you are to discuss them strictly in the context of subjectivism (aka, individual/personal relativism).
