Individual vs. Society Essay

Description

Part of learning how to engage in academic work is the ability to research and learn what the academic community has to say about a particular issue. This essay will practice synthesizing your own research into a cohesive extended essay. We will build off of one of our previous essays for this class. You can either choose Essay #1 (Rogerian Argument Essay) or Essay #3 (Individual vs. Society Essay).  Your sources must be reputable and reliable. Good sources include the following:  newspapers (New York Times, Washington Post, etc.) magazines (Time, Newsweek, etc.) books scholarly journals some websites   If you choose to expand on the second essay, you can preform research on the authors’ theories and or background, and incorporate the research into the essay. You can also perform research that amplifies particular topics within the authors’ ideas. As an example, if Cornel West discusses the tradition of democracy in the U.S., you may want to add in some research about the history of democracy, and specifically link that to his ideas.    If you choose to expand on the first essay, you will simply amplify the process that you have already begun. You can provide more research on the topic that you started to do. You might add to your own side of the topic in order to solidify the ideas.    Remember for research papers you can add: Narrative: example through story or anecdote Compare and contrast Exposition: defining an idea Counter argument: avoids bias; illustrates the writer is aware of the other side; should almost always counter the counter argument. Research: statistics, facts, article quotes, surveys, experiments
