Classical music reviews generally address two separate but equal items: the first is a description and opinion regarding the compositions presented on the program.  The second is a review of the skill of the actual musicians performing these works.

Your paper should include:

A description of the overall event:  Who performed? (Names of the ensemble, soloists or conductor) Include any information you think is important, but do not copy their entire bio.  Avoid making lists – lists are boring!  You don’t need to include all the titles of the piece in your first paragraph, as you will discuss them in the body of your paper.  If you are attending the opera, you don’t want to list the entire cast in your introduction — maybe just note who the most important roles were sung by.

Discuss the actual performance venue — how did it translate on screen?  As this is a two dimensional experience, did the venue feel formal or casual?  Did it seem large or intimate?    Did you feel welcome or was it intimidating?

Discuss the performers:  Were they skilled?  Did they engage you as a listener?  If multiple performers, were they all equally proficient and engaging?  How were the players dressed?  What kind of tone did they set for the performance?  Did the performers speak directly to the audience? Did they seem comfortable in this new streaming environment?  Given the option, would you want to hear them again? Would you go to hear them in person, given the opportunity?

A description of the music:  Discuss the various works that were performed on the program. What musical period were these works written in? Did any particular works stand out to you?  Anything you didn’t like?  Did the program work as whole?  Was it too long or two short for this online format?

Finally, sum it all up.  Was this a great event worth repeating or did it fall flat of your expectations? Would you recommend it to a friend?
