Civil Rights, Women’s Rights and Feminism

1. In a short essay of at least five paragraphs, reflect upon what you believe the major differences and similarities women of different cultural backgrounds faced in the upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s.  In your readings this week, you have examples of black and Latina women who fought for civil rights for their people in a broad sense, but who often faced sexism from within the movements they helped grow.  At the same time, you have examples of white women who, while often finding solidarity with women of color in these struggles, came from a different perspective in relation to their unequal status in employment, family, and society, and who became the most recognizable figures in the American media of what would become known as the women’s rights/feminist/women’s liberation movements.  Feel free to bring in outside sources in your analysis, and be sure to use specific examples in proving your thesis.
