During this lock-down, never-never land we’ve been in, does it seem like some days are slipping into one another?  When it started it made me think of “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray.  I’m assuming you’ve seen it. If you haven’t, you’ve seen some version of it in the last few years.

A person with flaws finds that they are waking up and having to relive the same day over and over again.  They are stuck in a time loop.

For horror fans, there’s “Happy Death Day”.

Last year, I watched the Netflix series “Russian Doll”. (Dark Comedy)

Even Hallmark got into the action with “12 Dates of Christmas”. (Romance/Light Comedy)

For the sci-fi folks there’s “Edge of Tomorrow” that gives it a video game twist.

For the anime fan, you can watch “Re: Zero”.  Sort of the same idea, but I don’t know it, so I’m not sure.

For the the more dramatically minded there’s “Before the Fall”.

The one foreign language version I know is: “Just Before Christmas” (Portuguese).  A comedy.

If other people find other movies with this premise let me know so I can add it to my list.  Other foreign language entries?

What is going on with this premise?

Even when there are killers or aliens that someone is having to manage, the ethics of the movie is about a person’s confrontation with themselves and learning to be a better person. These are all about character and virtues. When the character in the time-loop just tries to change the consequences, change the outcome, they fail.  When they try to ignore the consequences and blindly “do the right thing” they fail.

The time-loop ends only when the person has become the right kind of person to solve the problem, and thereby live a better and more satisfying life—a life that will also be better for all around them. Life is about becoming a better person, a better character, than you were yesterday (virtue ethics).

The ethical life is one spent bettering yourself, and thinking about how your character affects the people in your life.

If you don’t, you get stuck.  All these movies/shows project that same ethics but with radically different story lines

What do you guys think?  Do you agree?  Can you find other films that aren’t just about the consequences vs duty conflict (as many action/adventure movies are), but are primarily about virtue–about building a better character?
