For Paper 2, you are to write a Research Essay. You should choose from one of the two following options: • Option #1—Life of a Famous Author, Artist, or Musician (Sample thesis statements: Edgar Allan Poe is perhaps most famous for writing horror stories, but he also delved into humor and invented the detective story.; Vincent Van Gogh, misunderstood and unappreciated in his time, revolutionized oil painting.; Jimi Hendrix, although dead by the age 27, forever changed the way electric guitars are played.) • Option #2—A Significant Historical Event (Sample thesis statements: The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of The Civil War.; The prohibition of alcohol in The United States in the 1930s, rather than eliminating social problems stemming from alcohol use and abuse, actually created more, specifically organized crime.; Portugal doesn’t receive enough credit as a seafaring nation in The Renaissance time period.) Your paper should have an explicitly stated thesis, a statement of what you intend to cover in your essay. The body paragraphs should support and develop the thesis and offer researched evidence from both primary and secondary sources to offer illustration and clarification of the topic and the thesis. The paper needs a conclusion which reiterates the thesis and reminds the reader what the essay has shown and why the information is important. Papers should be 4-6 pages (typed, double space 12 point font, MLA style format and documentation) and include 4- 5 sources. The final draft is due on Moodle by 11 PM on Monday, June 28.
