We have discussed Mehmet ʿAli’s construction of state institutions and founding of a dynasty in 19th c. Egypt, and you have read Khaled Fahmy’s article about how ʿAli’s creation of a conscript army was a core effort upon which other state-building initiatives converged. ʿAli’s many state-building efforts also reflected the adoption and deployment of new (and old) forms of modern state power. Please read the handout “A Brief Introduction to Michel Foucault’s concepts of Power” to get a sense of how Foucault defined “sovereign power,” “disciplinary power,” and “biopower.” Then, please consider the primary sources found in Clancy-Smith and Smith’s sourcebooks on pp. 65-70 and try to identify some of the forms of modern state power discussed in the Foucault handout in these documents.
