Chapter 3 of your textbook explores the role of sport and physical activity in Ancient Greece. For the Greeks, sport and physical activity were intimately linked to religious and cultural practices, as evidenced perhaps most clearly in the Olympic Games. Yet while the Greeks of antiquity saw value in the “physical,” contemporary scholars have posited that this is less true in our modern society.

Task: Read James G. Thompson’s article entitled, “Logos Protreptikos” (see PDF under this week’s “Reading” tab). The piece provides a brief overview of the state of kinesiology in the 1980s, focusing on the experiences of students who were “angered, hurt, or confused by the perception others have of physical education.”

Then, in a one-page reflection (double-spaced, one-inch margins, 12 pt., Times New Roman font), please respond to the following questions: Is this consistent with your experience as a kinesiology major? What stereotypes or misperceptions about our field may contribute to a lack of pride? What, according to Thompson and your textbook, can we learn about the value of human movement from the Ancient Greeks?
